In short

Just Black Screen does not collect analytics, crash reports or usage data. It goes online only for the things listed below. We don’t sell or share your data.

What the app sends

  • When you enter a license key, the app sends the key and your Mac’s name (the Name in System Settings → General → About) to Polar to activate it. The name lets you tell your Macs apart in Polar’s customer portal.
  • About once a week, the app sends the key and the activation ID to Polar to check that the key is still valid.
  • When you choose Deactivate on This Mac, the app sends the key and the activation ID to Polar to free up that Mac.
  • About once a day, the app asks its own website, just-black-screen.web.app, whether a newer version is out. If you choose to install it, the app downloads the update from GitHub, where the downloads are kept. Neither request includes anything about you or your license.

Polar also sees your IP address, as any server you connect to does. Polar’s privacy policy covers what it does with this.

What stays on your Mac

  • Your PIN, schedule and other settings, in config.json.
  • The date the free trial started, your license key, the activation ID and the email address on the license, in license.json.

These files never leave your Mac.

When you buy

Polar handles the payment, so your card details go to Polar and its payment processor, never to us. We can see your name, email address, country and order in Polar’s dashboard. We use them only to support you, to handle refunds and to keep the tax records the law requires.

This website

This website does not use cookies or analytics. The hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, for security.

Removing your data

Delete the app, then delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/com.kareui.justblackscreen. If a license is active, choose Deactivate on This Mac first so you can use it on another Mac.

To have your purchase records deleted, email us. Some records must be kept for as long as tax law requires.
